In 2026, volunteers from Conserving Carolina adopted the cemetery for periodic maintenance.

From 2014 to April 2024, the Thomas-Fletcher Cemetery was maintained by several members of the former Etowah Heritage group, volunteers with permission to access the property, and working under the sponsorship of the County's Adopt-A-Cemetery program.

Cemetery maintenance was done approximately every 3-4 weeks each year from March through October.  In 2022, funds were raised to replace the broken down, 2007 cemetery fence with a  new, western cedar slit-rail fence.   The volunteers were unable to continue the work after April 2024.

When members of Etowah Heritage group began work as caretakers at this cemetery in 2014, we found Susan's broken headstone literally laying on top of the ground.  For years the broken headstone lay on the ground while the base and other pieces lay buried - disturbed by the roots of an old, stubborn stump.

With permission and guidance from the Adopt-A-Cemetery program, pieces were found, the stump and roots removed; headstone pieces transported home in 2014 for a winter repair project; the headstone and base were repaired, waiting for spring; March 31, 2015, headstone was placed.
