Website Note:  The important history of Native Americans in Western North Carolina, and Henderson County in particular, is a highly complex and serious topic to present, beyond the scope of this website.  There are varied academic perspectives, facts, and interpretations of historical material to consider.

Evidence of Native American habitation and hunting activity in the French Broad River valley has been documented by NC state agencies.  Additionally, local sources advise that artifacts have been found in the Etowah area by local residents in earlier decades.
