FARMS OF ETOWAH VALLEY'S PAST
EARLY TIMES ~ LATER TIMES
EARLY TIMES ~ LATER TIMES
What was the Etowah Valley like in its heyday as a farming community?
Some helpful information comes from the 1900 Census, Mills River Township - District 46 - west and south of the Mills River (south prong). District 46 included the Etowah Valley area. 161 of 197 Heads-of-Household list 'farmer' as occupation. These 161 self-sustaining farms represent 82% of the households in District 46 in 1900. Of the 161 farmers, perhaps approximately one-third (54) of these were located in the Etowah Valley area. This number is simply an estimate at this time. See also, Etowah Farms Notebook - main desk reference at the Etowah Branch Library. The FARMS webpage is incomplete and a work-in-progress. Farms are presented alphabetically by family name along with a year that represents the earliest known date of the farm, based on information currently available. Please contact the website if you would like to share information or photos about Etowah's farm history. |
